Shota is a struggling hairstylist in Paris. When news of his mother's death forces him to return to Nishinari -- Osaka's day-laborer district -- he finds his hometown transformed. It's full of tourists drawn to the cheap lodgings that once housed the working class clientele. But then his father, Goro, and the family hair salon haven't changed one bit. The business, though, is on the rocks. Can Shota, who loathes his life, his dad and everything he stands for, save Salon Aozora? In the process, the truth behind why his mother left years ago is revealed, and Shota begins to see his shallow father and the annoying townsfolk in a new light.
