- A quest to unravel the secrets of evolution
In Tokyo, there are totally sealed off "ost worlds" whose unspoiled environs are home to precious wildlife.
A 100-meter high rock stands alone at sea 650 km south of the Tokyo metropolis. This episode joins scientists and engineers on a two-year survey of this inaccessible outpost -- the first detailed study ever. The team encounters strange lifeforms in the crags of the cliff face and mysterious deep-sea creatures in the surrounding waters.
This remote part of the Ogasawara Islands lies 1,300 km from Tokyo. Visiting is strictly banned, but an NHK crew joined the first major scientific survey here in 10 years. For researchers, the island offers a rare opportunity to view evolution in action. Braving an arduous climb and a swarm of seabirds, the team discovers one new species after another.
