A Doctor Beside the Deathbed

Synopsis
Happiness and dying at home

Dr. Oichiro Kobori is 80 years old, but you wouldn't know it from his buoyant gait. On his rounds in town, he sometimes makes up reasons for a visit just so he can exchange a few words and share a laugh with his patients. A former elite surgeon at a prestigious Tokyo hospital, Dr. Kobori is now lending his hand to the elderly and terminally ill who want to die at home, often in difficult situations. His remarkable ability shows through in subtle, timely suggestions that alleviate the families' enormous strain without alienating the patients themselves. As people increasingly see contented death as essential to a happy life, the director's camera captures one doctor's determined mission in Japan's super-aging society.
