Underwater Universe of the Orda Cave

The quest to reveal one of the world's most beautiful caves in 4K

Crystal clear water and pure white gypsum rock. The Orda Cave is legendary among divers for its unique beauty. Located beneath the Ural Mountains in Russia, the cave's waters are at their clearest in winter, when the land above lies frozen. In the depths of this season, with temperatures approaching minus 40 degrees Celsius, NHK's diving team attempts to film the cave in 4K for the first time ever. They succeed in capturing stunning images of the gleaming gypsum rock, a majestic place unlike any other on the planet. Scientists give them insight to trace the cave's origins, enabling the film crew to uncover a miraculous story of how the cave was naturally formed 300 million years ago by climate change and a shifting landscape.
