I Was a Caged Bird

Synopsis
Care or isolation? A dark secret comes to light

Japan accounts for around 20% of the world's psychiatric care beds. For years, long-term stays were not considered rare. But the troubling state of the country's mental illness care came to light in 2011, when the disaster at the Fukushima nuclear power plant prompted relocation. Numerous long-term cases were found to not actually require hospitalization. Why did these men and women have to spend decades institutionalized, even though their conditions were stable and they were capable of living in society? The program delves into the dark side of psychiatric care, and follows patients who are trying to rebuild their lives.
