Beyond Seeing and Hearing

Synopsis
Hisayo and Yoshihiko Umeki live in a remote village in Japan. Hisayo is blind and deaf, and Yoshihiko is her interpreter, husband and friend.
In his youth, pursuing an alternative lifestyle, Yoshihiko ended up leading a self-sufficient life living off the land. Meanwhile, Hisayo lost her hearing at the age of 2, and after going through a marriage and divorce, she began to lose her eyesight in her thirties. The couple eventually met, and then in their fifties, decided to get married.
Their marriage was far from clear-sailing, but they lead a simple yet satisfying life. By following the life of this couple over the course of a year, this documentary re-examines what happiness can mean, even in adversities.
