Atomic Espionage: The Race for the Bomb

Synopsis
The problem of nuclear weapons still plagues mankind today with the existence of Iran and North Korea's nuclear programs and the continuous threat of nuclear terrorism. When did these weapons first appear? How have nuclear bombs -- "the Plutonian fire" which could destroy the world -- been able to proliferate? Newly released historical papers and testimony reveal the anguish and guilt faced by the scientists involved in the development of weapons of mass destruction and the cold reality of international politics. This program will interweave testimonial tapes with rare color footage and realistic dramatizations of espionage activities to explore the roots of the nuclear threat.
